Ecological Architecture are based at Tombreck alongside Loch Tay in Perthshire.
Our project The Big Shed won Carbon Trust’s Low Carbon Building Award 2013 for newbuild, which has validated our approach to architectural design.
We undertake projects from the smallest extension or conversion to small public buildings. We help community groups to progress their projects and offer design and project management assistance to self-builders.
We use natural materials such as Hemcrete, straw bales and local timber. Highly insulated building envelopes using sheep’s wool, hemp or wood fibre batts, ensure that renewable technologies, chosen specifically each location, are employed in a very efficient manner with the possibility of selling surplus electricity. The requirement for space heating is kept to a minimum, often employing biomass boilers such as wood pellet stoves, linked with solar photovoltaics to provide heating and hot water.
Our construction techniques exclude the use of materials that can potentially give-off gas VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the interior or pollute the environment during construction. These processes ensure that the building fabric ‘breathes (like a Gortex jacket) and provides an above average level of interior comfort. The use of clay and lime plasters internally is also well liked by our clients.
The location of the building is the starting point of each design and we aim to maximise the benefits offered by it and respond imaginatively and ‘politely’ to it, whilst responding to our client’s stated needs and budget. The aesthetic quality of our buildings is embedded in the materials that we use to enclose and manipulate space in ways that are pleasing-some say inspirational- and functional. We work closely with our clients from the outset to the completion of their project, or to any stage as required.
We have specified Treecraft windows in many of our projects and find them to be of high quality, both in the product itself and the service offered.
Please contact us for a preliminary discussion of your project, or an idea of one. We offer services for planning, design, building warrant and construction management stages and work closely with a consultant structural engineer, quantity surveyor, service engineer and others as appropriate for each project.
